Beliefs and Doctrines
Mays Chapel UMC may be your first experience in the United Methodist Church and you may be wondering what United Methodists believe and how we live out our life of faith in the world. The Book of Discipline of the UMC states that we, alongside Christians of other denominations, “confess belief in the triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” The distinctive nature of the United Methodist Church is not in new doctrine or beliefs but rather to call people to experience the justifying and sanctifying grace of God and to encourage people to grow in the knowledge and love of God through the personal and corporate disciplines of the Christian life. The emphasis that the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, placed on faith and love put into practice in real, practical ways moves us toward deep Christian living.
